Protections for Licensed Occupations
New Jersey law states that you cannot be denied a professional license because of your conviction unless the crime for which you were convicted relates to the occupation you wish to enter. If the licensing board or agency denies you a license, they must explain, in writing, on certain factors such as:
- the seriousness of the crime
- the circumstances of the crime
- the date and your age when convicted
- if the crime was isolated or repeated event, social conditions, and evidence of rehabilitation
You can ask your parole officer about applying for a “certificate of rehabilitation” which can be used in your license application.
